Located inside of Arusha National Park, climbing Mt Meru is a very nice experience. At 4,566m (14,977 ft), it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. A Mt Meru climb is usually accomplished as a 4 day itinerary although it can be done in 3 days. It is very useful to climb Mt Meru to acclimate for a Mt Kilimanjaro climb but is an excellent climb in its own right. There is only one route on Mt Meru and overnights are inside of basic huts. At lower elevations, there is an abundance of wildlife so park regulations require an armed park ranger to accompany all climbers. Fewer people have problems with AMS on Meru due to the climb being steeper than Kilimanjaro, forcing climbers to proceed more slowly (allowing better adjustment to the altitude) and the lower altitude. The packing list for the climb is identical to Mt Kilimanjaro. The scenery is quite lovely throughout the climb, from the lush vegetation at the lower altitudes, to the collapsed ash cone on the mountain, and under good weather conditions, Mt Kilimanjaro is easily seen from Socialist Peak (Meru’s highest point). We welcome you to experienced this challenging climbing experience.
